INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Gov. Mike Pence has appointed the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s current chief of staff the agency’s new commissioner.

Pence announced Tuesday that Carol Comer will begin serving Friday as IDEM’s commissioner. She will succeed agency head Tom Easterly, who announced his impending retirement last month after more than 10 years as IDEM’s top administrator.

Comer served as IDEM’s general counsel before she became chief of staff for the agency that implements federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment.

Pence says Comer will serve “with integrity and dedication” as IDEM commissioner.

The governor also announced Tuesday that IDEM deputy chief of staff Bruno Pigott will succeed Comer as IDEM chief of staff. Pigott has also been assistant commissioner of IDEM’s Office of Water Quality since 2005.
