ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York corrections officials have appointed a new superintendent at Fishkill Correctional Facility in the Hudson Valley.

The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision says Robert Cunningham will head the medium-security prison in Dutchess County.

He has been superintendent of medium-security Woodbourne prison in Sullivan County since July 2010 and spent more than 35 years with the department.

The department says he has been charged with ensuring Fishkill operates “in a safe and effective manner” and will review all safety concerns including talks with the guards’ union and the inmate liaison committee.

Inmate Samuel Harrell, who was 30, died from injuries there in April. His death has been ruled a homicide “following physical altercation with correction officers.”

Cunningham replaces former Superintendent William Connolly, who retired Aug. 14.
