PITTSBURGH (AP) - A Pittsburgh man found guilty of first-degree murder was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole.

Twenty-year-old Paul Kendrick was sentenced Monday for the shooting death of 21-year-old Maurice Freeman in 2014.

Police say the confrontation began at a basketball court when a group of men that included Kendrick asked Freeman where he was from. When Freeman replied with his hometown, the men said that if he wasn’t from the Northview neighborhood, he would die.

Witnesses told police that Kendrick and the others followed Freeman when he went to buy cigarettes and shot him.

Lonelle Freeman called his son’s death a “shock and a nightmare.”
