FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a motorist who was fleeing police following a domestic violence call crashed his car and later died.

He has been identified as 39-year-old Jose Campana Ontiveros of Fresno.

On Monday morning, police responded to a call southeast of Fresno from a woman who said her former boyfriend assaulted her and fired multiple rounds at her. He then drove away from the business where she was. She was not injured.

A short time later, a Fresno County Sheriff’s deputy spotted the suspect’s car. Police said the driver sped up and tossed a gun out the window.

The deputy turned on his lights and sirens and continued to follow the car at speeds up to 75 mph.

The suspect crashed into a parked car and was severely injured. Paramedics rushed him to the hospital, where he later died.
