LOCKPORT, N.Y. (AP) - The great-grandson of a Civil War veteran is donating a cache of historic letters and other items to Niagara County.

The items were handed down by Union Pvt. Simon Cummins and are being given to the county by great-grandson Melvin Jones on Wednesday.

County Legislator William Keith McNall says the letters will give historians and students of history insights into the day-to-day life of soldiers during the war.

County historian Catherine Emerson says one of the letters is interrupted midway with news that President Abraham Lincoln had been shot.

Cummins’ unit, the 151st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, was raised through recruiting in Niagara County.
