HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Officials at Hilton Head Island say their water will be safe, even though saltwater is intruding into more wells on the resort island.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported (https://bit.ly/1V9IBQU ) that the Hilton Head Public Service District has taken a well out of production because of saltwater making its way into the Upper Floridan Aquifer.

The newspaper reported it’s the seventh well the utility has lost since 2000 because of saltwater seeping into the wells. General manager Pete Nardi says the utility expects to lose four of its remaining five wells by 2024.

Officials said there will be no interruption of water service on the island.

Managers of the island’s three public service districts say recent upgrades will provide plenty of water for decades to come.
