BARBERTON, Ohio (AP) - Police say a visiting minister at a northeast Ohio church stole up to $50,000 from an elderly member of the congregation under the guise of helping others “in the name of the Lord.”

Richard Boley is charged with felony third-degree theft from the elderly.

Barberton Police Sgt. Brian Davis says the 67-year-old minister met his 87-year-old victim about a year ago at Trinity Church of God in Cuyahoga Falls.

Davis says Boley became the woman’s primary caregiver and forced her to move to Barberton, where he cut off contact with her family.

Police say Boley then named himself the woman’s medical power-of-attorney and coerced her into giving him the money, which he used to purchase himself a new Mercedes-Benz and other items.

Boley didn’t return attempts seeking comment.
