MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Attorney General Luther Strange says a prison inmate has been convicted in cold case sex crimes and burglaries from the mid-1980s.

Strange said in a statement Thursday that 46-year-old David Leon Garth was convicted in cold case rapes and burglaries from 1985 and 1986 in Decatur. His sentencing is set for Oct. 27.

Officials say the technology to link Garth to the crimes using DNA evidence didn’t exist nearly 30 years ago but the Attorney General’s Cold Case Unit was able to use new technology to launch an investigation that led to Garth’s indictment in 2012.

Alabama Department of Corrections records show that Garth is serving a 99-year sentence at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility on burglary charges out of Morgan County from 1987.
