PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Bus riders are planning a rush-hour rally to protest possible fare hikes on the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority.

The RIPTA Riders Alliance says protesters will gather at the state’s largest bus hub in Kennedy Plaza in Providence at 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

RIPTA’s board has agreed to look into whether it should start charging disabled and elderly riders, who currently ride for free. It’s also studying possible changes to other fares.

Don Rhodes, president of the alliance, says they are opposed to balancing RIPTA’s deficit “on the backs of passengers.”
