FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) - Preparations at a temporary building will delay the start of classes until Sept. 8 for Duncombe Elementary students in Fort Dodge.

The former Fair Oaks Middle School is being readied for students because the elementary building was closed after structural issues were discovered just three weeks before the start of classes.

District spokeswoman Jennifer Lane told The Messenger (https://bit.ly/1hI6jWy ) that the cleaning and other work haven’t been greater challenges than anticipated. Rather, she says, district officials “just didn’t know initially how long it would take to get things accomplished.”

Lane says starting one week late won’t put the students behind, because the school calendar is built on instruction hours. She says the district calendar has a cushion built in, so there are more hours available that what the state requires.
