RENO, Nev. (AP) - The Washoe County Medical Examiner says a Carson City deputy and a suspect he confronted died of each other’s gunfire.

Dr. Laura Knight released preliminary autopsy results Thursday for Jonathan Pope and Deputy Carl Howell, who both died after a confrontation in Carson City on Aug. 15.

The coroner ruled both deaths homicides. She said Howell was shot three times, and Pope was shot twice, but didn’t say where on the body.

Toxicology test results are pending.

Police say 35-year-old Howell was responding to a report of domestic violence when he approached a home and encountered the 30-year-old armed suspect. That’s when the two exchanged gunfire.

Knight said officers escorted Howell’s body to her office in Reno, and a rotating honor guard stayed there until the autopsy was complete.
