NEW YORK (AP) - Federal prosecutors have joined a local investigation into the April death of a New York state inmate following a confrontation with prison guards.
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara (buh-RAH’-ruh) said in a statement Thursday his office will coordinate with the Dutchess County district attorney’s probe into Samuel Harrell’s death.
The 30-year-old inmate’s death at the medium-security Fishkill Correctional Facility has been ruled a homicide.
An autopsy report obtained by The New York Times earlier this month found Harrell died “following physical altercation with correction officers.”
On Tuesday the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision announced the appointment of a new superintendent at the Hudson Valley prison. A spokesman says correctional investigators looking into the case will work with federal prosecutors.
A spokesman for state prison guards didn’t immediately have a comment.
