PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Former state Sen. Chris Telfer says she’s running for state treasurer as a member of the Independent Party.

Telfer confirmed her plans on Thursday.

Telfer is an accountant from Bend who served one term in the Oregon Senate as a Republican. She was defeated in the 2012 GOP primary by Tim Knopp.

With 109,000 members, the Independent Party was certified this month as Oregon’s third major political party. That means it gets a state-funded primary for a slot on the 2016 ballot.

Telfer ran for treasurer once before but lost to Democrat Ted Wheeler in 2010. Wheeler is barred by term limits from seeking re-election.

Democratic state Rep. Tobias Read and Lake Oswego City Councilor Jeff Gudman, a Republican, have also taken steps toward running for treasurer.
