PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A former executive assistant to Portland Mayor Charlie Hales is suing the city and the mayor’s former chief of staff for at least $350,000 in damages.

The Oregonian reports (https://is.gd/FY13Lu ) Cevero Gonzalez filed the lawsuit Tuesday alleging that Gail Shibley and the city harassed and discriminated against him before and after learning of his disability. The 51-year-old has identified his disability as being HIV-positive.

According to the suit, Gonzalez’s work duties were assigned to other employees and he wasn’t afforded the same benefits as other workers after he disclosed his disability to Shibley. Gonzalez alleges he was left out of policy meetings and “treated hostilely” by Shibley.

Shibley in an email Wednesday said that the lawsuit is “groundless” and that previous complaints by Gonzalez produced no findings of wrongdoing.
