ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) - A former University of Vermont basketball player is calling it quits.

The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/1JoFCir ) Taylor Coppenrath announced his retirement from a 10-year professional basketball career in Europe on Wednesday.

Coppenrath helped the Catamounts to three straight NCAA tournaments. The team beat Syracuse in the first round of March Madness in 2005. Syracuse previously won the national championship in 2003.

The 33-year-old Vermont native graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy and is returning to his alma mater as a full-time teacher and assistant coach with the boys basketball program. He started Wednesday.

Coppenrath says he felt it was a good time to retire as his first child was born in April.

Coppenrath will be inducted into the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame in September.
