BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Canadian man who has been hired to become the next superintendent of the Burlington School District has finally received the visa he needs to start work.

The school district announced Wednesday that Yaw Obeng has been granted an H-1B visa and is expected to begin work in the Vermont city in the next few weeks.

The district says the key to getting a visa was an opening for a part-time adjunct professor in the University of Vermont’s College of Education and Social Services that Obeng will fill.

An H1B visa is a temporary work permit for highly skilled workers. It will give the district time to pursue the longer-term O-1 visa for Obeng.

Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger says it’s good news that Obeng will begin work soon.
