LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - A central Florida man is dead after authorities say he crashed his motorcycle into a school bus while fleeing a traffic stop.
Lakeland police say an officer attempted to pull over 28-year-old Niriel Cordero at an intersection Thursday morning after seeing the motorcycle passing on a double yellow line. Police say Cordero, whose license was suspended, rode off, but the officer didn’t pursue.
Two minutes later, police received a 911 call about a motorcycle running a red light at another intersection and crashing into a Polk County school bus. Cordero was reportedly wearing a helmet, but he died at the scene.
The bus had just dropped off students at Blake Elementary School, so there were no children on board. No injuries were reported for the bus driver.
