PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A western Massachusetts man has been sentenced to prison for growing marijuana that he said was for medicinal purposes.

The Berkshire Eagle (https://bit.ly/1Ijnti5 ) reports that 39-year-old Daniel Chao of North Adams pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges of fraudulent use of a medical marijuana registration card or cultivation registration and cultivation of marijuana.

A judge sentenced him to up to two years in prison.

Prosecutors say police found an indoor and outdoor growing operation in 2013 with about 88 marijuana plants. Police also found scales, grow lights and other items.

Prosecutors say Chao was running a growing operation under a different name, and kept detailed journals with lists of medical marijuana patients. Authorities estimated the value of the marijuana at about $80,000.
