CANTON, Mo. (AP) - A northeast Missouri man is hospitalized with severe injuries after allegedly pointing a gun at police, prompting two officers to open fire.

The Quincy (Illinois) Herald-Whig reports that 28-year-old Timothy Sutton of Durham had surgery Wednesday night for life-threatening injuries. Specific details of his injuries were not released.

The shooting happened earlier Wednesday near Canton City Hall. Two Canton officers were questioning Sutton as part of a criminal investigation.

Lewis County Sheriff David Parrish says Sutton was allowed to step outside to smoke. Parrish says Sutton reached into his car, grabbed a gun, and pointed it at Police Chief Ryan Crandell.

Parrish says two other officers shot Durham. Both are on leave pending an investigation.

Canton, a town of 2,300 residents, is 150 miles north of St. Louis.
