OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A police officer shot and killed a man who beat her with a metal chain after attacking another woman Thursday, authorities said.
The officer, an 18-year veteran, was hospitalized in stable condition, police said.
The attack occurred Thursday morning after police got a report from a woman in the Adams Point neighborhood who said she was assaulted when she confronted a trespasser in the garage of a residential complex. That woman received minor injuries, police said.
The officer had finished taking a report from the woman and was driving away when the suspect stepped from a sidewalk in front of her patrol car, according to a police statement.
“The officer got out of the vehicle and was immediately assaulted by the suspect, who began hitting her in the head and face with a chain,” the statement said.
He was shot when he kept swinging the chain and advancing on the officer, police said.
The man died at the scene. His name was not immediately released.
At an afternoon news conference, Police Chief Sean Whent said footage from the officer’s body camera indicated that no words were exchanged before the assault.
It was Oakland’s sixth officer-involved shooting this year and the fourth to end in a fatality.
