CALERA, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say one person is dead after a small airplane crashed near the Shelby County airport south of Birmingham.

Police in Calera say the single-engine aircraft went down about 7 p.m. Thursday.

Photos and video from the scene show the wreckage ablaze in grass near a line of trees. The plane went down near the runway as the pilot was attempting to land.

The pilot was the only person on board. Authorities haven’t released the person’s name.

The crash site is near a busy interchange on Interstate 65. Calera Police Chief Sean Lemley says several people rushed to the scene trying to help, but there was nothing they could do.
