FORT DRUM, N.Y. (AP) - The Army says about 300 10th Mountain Division soldiers from Fort Drum will head to South Korea in early October for a nine-month mission.

The 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade will primarily fly Kiowa helicopters for their work, supporting ongoing training and operations throughout the country.

The mission will serve as the final run for the squadron with the Kiowa helicopters, which were deactivated locally at the end of July.

The Army said when the unit returns next summer, it will transition to an attack reconnaissance squadron by fielding AH-64 Apache helicopters and Shadow unmanned aerial vehicles.
