PITTSBURGH (AP) - Amtrak is about to offer roll-on bicycle service on a route that passes through Pittsburgh.

An Amtrak spokeswoman tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (https://bit.ly/1LG2Unt ) the expanded bike service on the Capitol Limited route will begin as early as next week. The railroad will charge a $25 fee for the service and reservations will be required.

Passengers will be responsible for rolling their bikes onto the trains, securing them, and rolling them off. Only standard-sized bikes are permitted.

Previously bikes had to be dismantled and packed into boxes. They could be loaded on and off trains only at staffed stations

Amtrak first expressed interest in providing the service five years ago. Amtrak did not respond to inquiries this week about why it took so long.
