BOSTON (AP) - Officials are investigating a case of animal cruelty after a group of cats were found dead at a construction site in Boston’s Dorchester section.

WCVB-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1hJ7Sn0 ) neighbors alerted police after a foul smell grew to become unbearable. The cats were discovered Thursday in a fenced-off construction site where they were drowned.

Animal Rescue League Lt. Alan Borgal says as investigators got closer, they knew the smell was from dead animals that were decomposing.

Borgal says he’s concerned with how the critters got into the construction site in the first place since cats don’t drown themselves.

Louis Miller, a neighborhood resident, says ears and legs were visible once the water receded.

It’s unknown how long the cats were in the water.

Investigators don’t believe the culprit is from the area.
