ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - A dead whale found floating in the Oakland Estuary off an Alameda dock has been towed away.

The Sausalito-based Marin Mammal Center says the whale was taken to a remote location on Thursday where scientists would try to determine what caused it to die.

The mammal center’s Laura Sherr tells the Oakland Tribune (https://bayareane.ws/1MZWUX7) the positioning of the whale made it impossible to identify its species. But scientists believe it was a larger baleen whale such as a blue or fin whale.

The whale was sighted in the estuary on Wednesday morning. Coast Guard officials have said it appears to have been dragged into San Francisco Bay from the ocean by a container ship, though it’s not clear whether the ship struck and killed the animal.
