GREENWOOD, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 24-year-old mother has been charged with desecration of human remains after the body of her dead newborn son was found in a trash bin at a Greenwood apartment complex.

Greenwood County deputies said in a news release they’re trying to determine if the baby was stillborn or alive.

Deputies say Kia Singletary had the baby Tuesday, put the baby in the trash bin and tried to clean up before calling 911. The hospital then called authorities because they determined Singletary gave birth but couldn’t find her newborn.

The Index-Journal of Greenwood reports (https://bit.ly/1NEN2lN ) at Singletary’s bond hearing Friday, her mother said her daughter took pills she found on the Internet to try and abort the baby.

Singletary’s lawyer says she did the right thing the wrong way.
