EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Officials say an out of control vehicle was responsible for an explosion and subsequent fire at an East Hartford gas station.

Police say the incident started around 11:40 a.m. Thursday when a car was rear-ended at a nearby intersection and was sent hurtling through a Wendy’s restaurant parking lot before crashing into a Main Street gas station.

The vehicle collided with the middle pump at the Phillips 66 gas station, sparking an explosion that sent flames high into the sky.

A witness says the driver of the vehicle may have accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake following the initial impact.

No injuries were reported.

Ernie Hutt, owner of a nearby restaurant, called the incident the “Miracle on Main Street.”
