CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A judge has scheduled a new bond hearing for a white former South Carolina police officer charged in the shooting death of a black motorist.

Local media outlets report that Judge Clifton Newman on Friday set a hearing for Michael Slager on Sept. 10 at 2 p.m.

A bond hearing for the former North Charleston police officer had been scheduled for Thursday but was delayed at the request of Slager’s defense team.

Slager is charged with murder in the April 4 shooting death of 50-year-old Walter Scott. A bystander’s cellphone video showed Slager firing eight times as Scott ran away, which inflamed the national debate about how blacks are treated by white law enforcement officers.

Slager was fired after the shooting.
