COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A man has been resentenced to probation after an appeals court in central Ohio overturned the prison term he was given after helping dump the body of a woman in a ditch after she died of a heroin overdose.

A judge in Columbus had sentenced 23-year-old Nicholas McCord in February to 10 months in prison for abuse of a corpse. McCord had pleaded guilty to helping his roommate dump the body of 23-year-old Jordyn Hollingsworth.

The Franklin County Court of Appeals agreed with McCord’s attorney that the judge couldn’t legally order jail time for abuse of a corpse, which according to state sentencing guidelines carries a presumption of probation.

The Columbus Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1Vez0bL ) reports that McCord was resentenced to three years of probation and 500 hours of community service.
