OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (AP) - Olive Branch has become the second city in DeSoto County to name a street for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Commercial Appeal reports (https://bit.ly/1PXddCy ) that Olive Branch officials and local residents gathered Thursday to dedicate a sign honoring the civil rights leader who was assassinated in 1968 in nearby Memphis, Tennessee.

The newly named Martin Luther King Jr. Drive is a section of what has long been called Pigeon Roost Road. The route connects established African-American neighborhoods to downtown.

Alderman unanimously approved renaming the street in February, and Mayor Scott Phillips says it took a while to get a good-looking sign made. The new sign is black with gold lettering.

The newspaper reports that more than 730 streets in the U.S. are named for King.
