SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Authorities say a man who died while holding his wife and three small children hostage in West Jordan earlier this week actually shot himself just before a police officer fired and hit him.

West Jordan Police Chief Douglas Diamond said Friday at a news conference that 27-year-old Kyle Lambrose was suicidal and had several weapons and ammunition in the house that made police believe he was ready for a gunfight on Wednesday.

Diamond says an autopsy revealed that the first shot was a self-inflicted wound. The shot from Sgt. Mitch Soper hit Lambrose almost simultaneously.

Lambrose’s wife and three kids- ages 3, 4 and 7 - were in the room and witnessed the shooting. The officer climbed a ladder, ripped off a screen and stood between the kids and Lambrose.
