SALTILLO, Miss. (AP) - Water and sewage rates will be increasing in Saltillo starting Oct. 1.

The city’s Board of Aldermen voted Tuesday increase the rate in order to cover the costs of operation for the water and sewage departments.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1EkLz0J ) the increase comes out to a 45-cent increase on the minimum bill.

Mayor Rex Smith says the increase is necessary because of a rise in costs of the materials required to treat the city’s water.

Nearly 20 years have passed since the last rate increase.

Smith says the water rate increase will be evaluated yearly.
