MOUNTAIN PASS, Calif. (AP) - A San Bernardino County mine and mineral processing facility is closing, and nearly 500 people are expected to be let go.

The Sun in San Bernardino reports (https://bit.ly/1JmVnnG ) that Colorado-based Molycorp announced earlier this week that they will transition the massive facility to care and maintenance mode, while outsourcing its rare earth oxide production to facilities in Estonia and China.

A Molycorp spokesman says it’s unclear how many of the facilities 500 employees will be let go, but that it is likely to be the majority of them.

The Mountain Pass site separates rare earth materials from each other and the low value soils where they are found.

On June 25, Molycorp and its North American subsidiaries and some non-operating subsidiaries outside of North America filed voluntary petitions under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware
