PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police have identified the suspect and the officer who shot him following an armed robbery.

Twenty-two-year-old Marquis Cantland, of Philadelphia, was last listed in critical condition following surgery for a gunshot wound. Police say Officer Brian Hines shot Cantland in the abdomen after Cantland refused to drop his gun on Wednesday.

Cantland has been charged with robbery, assault, gun violations and more.

Police responding to a robbery call in Cobbs Creek encountered Cantland. One officer chased on foot. Hines stayed in the patrol car.

Police say Cantland stopped on a corner, apparently waiting for the officer. They say that’s when Hines ordered Cantland to drop his gun. Hines shot at him when he didn’t comply.

Department policy requires the officers to be temporarily placed on administrative duty pending an investigation.
