SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Authorities say a security guard’s gun fired at a West Valley City driver’s license office as he tried to remove a man arguing with a clerk.

The Deseret News reports (https://bit.ly/1fSdYzM ) that the guard was on the floor struggling with the patron on Monday morning when a shot was fired into the ceiling. Police are investigating if the shot was intentional or the gun went off accidently.

Rujal Hassan Abdi had been asked to leave after the confrontation with the clerk, but the security guard stepped in when the patron returned to continue the fight.

West Valley police spokesman Sam Johnson says the 21-year-old man surrendered immediately after the shot was fired.

Abdi was arrested on suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct.

A lawyer for Abdi did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
