COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) - Towers that welcome visitors to Council Bluffs will shine a little brighter at night thanks to the installation of new LED lights.

The LED lights are more energy efficient than the tower’s original neon lights and allow for more colors, The Daily Nonpareil (https://bit.ly/1SHgFq0 ) reported.

The structures at the end of West Broadway were built in 2002 as part of an Iowa West Foundation project. The retrofitting process took around four months, and Iowa West switched tower lights back on in late July.

“Years ago, (the foundation) made a commitment to help out with entry ways and streetscapes in Council Bluffs,” said Rich Sorich, project manager with Iowa West. “It was time to replace the lights on those towers to something more modern, something that gives us more options as far as seasonal themes go.”

The tower lights currently feature red, yellow, orange and green as part of a summer theme. It’s scheduled to remain until Aug. 15, when it will be followed by a rainbow theme until the end of the month.

Nicole Lindquist, communications director for Iowa West, said the colors will change throughout the year for seasons, holidays and other occasions.

“West Broadway is the gateway to our community,” Lindquist said. “The board felt the streetscape in that area is important to make a good impression for visitors and to make a lasting impression that we care about our community.”
