ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - A credit totaling more than $1 million will provide more money to be spent on the Rapides Parish Coliseum renovation project.

The Town Talk reports (https://townta.lk/1IVwHIi) police jurors, meeting in committee on Monday, unanimously approved a change order of just over $1 million for the $22.9 million renovation project. While change orders often mean additional costs for a project, this one resulted in savings that can be used for additional work or equipment for the renovation project.

The change-order approval will become official when the full jury votes on it at next Monday’s jury meeting.

Police Jury President Richard Billings said the overall savings “will go right back into the project, and we’ll be able to do more.”

The jury is hoping for additional savings that could be used to bolster the Exhibition Hall portion of the renovation project, he said.

Savings were found in two areas while additional costs are being incurred in putting in the Coliseum’s new foundation because of “wet soil conditions,” according to Bill Tudor of Alliance Design Group, which is overseeing the renovation project.

The net result is the $1,083,486 credit.

The Coliseum renovation project began in late April and is expected to be finished by December 2016.

Demolition is about 90 percent complete, while the process of installing the piers for the new foundation is nearly 50 percent complete.

All of the plastic seats have been removed from the Coliseum, so the stands, for the time being, look like they did when the Coliseum opened 50 years ago, when visitors sat on concrete. New seats will be added as part of the renovation.
