IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The committee searching for the next University of Iowa president plans to interview nine finalists next week.

The committee on Tuesday selected the nine out of a pool of 46 applicants who applied for the position.

They will be interviewed over two days next week at an off-site location. Their names are being kept confidential for now.

A smaller number of finalists is expected to be brought to campus for additional interviews. The Board of Regents is expected to make a hiring decision Sept. 4.

The winnowing of the candidate pool came after the search committee evaluated the applicants during a closed meeting.

Interim President Jean Robillard, who is leading the search committee, is pleased with what he called a “tremendous pool of candidates with diverse backgrounds and ideas.”
