CARPINTERIA, Calif. (AP) - A 12-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after a collapsed sand tunnel caused him to almost suffocate at Carpinteria Beach.

KEYT-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1eSkeqv ) that the boy was digging a tunnel near the water Tuesday evening when the sand collapsed on top of him.

Witnesses noticed the boy’s legs sticking out of the stand and began digging to free his head.

Carpinteria city fire interim chief Jim Rampton says it’s a reminder to be vigilant about possible danger.

An ambulance took the boy to Cottage Hospital. His condition has not been released.
