COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - An attorney for a man accused by police of pouring gasoline on a woman and lighting her on fire behind a central Ohio gas station says the woman was the man’s fiancé and called it a “horrible accident.”

Forty-year-old Michael Slager has been charged with felonious assault and aggravated arson. A judge in Franklin County Municipal Court on Wednesday ordered Slager held on an $800,000 bond. The incident occurred Saturday in the Columbus suburb of Gahanna.

Thirty-one-year-old Judith Malinowski is hospitalized in critical condition.

Attorney Douglas Shaw said Wednesday that Slager loves his fiancé very much and was injured himself while putting out the fire. Shaw said he doesn’t have all the information yet and can’t comment about how the woman had gasoline poured on her.
