COBURG, Ore. (AP) - A fire has damaged a historic building in Coburg that was the proposed site for the town’s first medical marijuana dispensary.

The Register-Guard reports (https://bit.ly/1hjDPSu ) that fire crews responded to the fire Tuesday evening. They arrived to find part of the historic Matthews House engulfed in flames.

Coburg Fire Chief Chad Minter estimated the damage, which appeared to have been limited to the back of the building, at $30,000.

A California woman and her daughter had applied to establish the vacant Matthews House as a medical dispensary. The proposal has received pushback from residents and nearby business owners who object to having a dispensary in the city.

Minter refused to release the fire department’s initial findings as to what may have been the cause of the fire.
