ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - A former police officer is charged with assaulting a University of Georgia student during an arrest in June.

The Athens Banner-Herald (https://bit.ly/1KQ1OoK ) reports 46-year-old Jonathan Fraser is charged with felony counts of aggravated assault and violating his oath as a police officer.

Fraser was with the Athens-Clarke County police for 17 years until his termination.

The firing followed Fraser’s arrest of Georgia student Michael Roquet on June 13.

The student accused the officer of attacking him during an early morning encounter that occurred after Fraser was called to a motel on a report of an intoxicated person.

Roquet was booked on charges including obstructing an officer, but the state was then called in to investigate.

Court records don’t show whether Fraser has a lawyer. Fraser is free on $30,000 bond.
