ATLANTA (AP) - The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles has announced a new executive director of parole.

A parole board news release says the board announced the selection of Christopher Barnett as executive director during its board meeting Tuesday. The appointment is effective immediately.

As executive director, Barnett is responsible for overseeing the agency’s day-to-day operations.

Barnett had served as interim director of the agency since April.

Barnett is a native of Hinesville and holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master of public administration from Georgia Southern University.

He began his law enforcement career in 1999 with the Fulton County Police Department. He became a parole officer in the Marietta district in 2003 and was promoted numerous times. He became regional director for the northeast region in May 2013.
