OCALA, Fla. (AP) - An inmate who has $53,000 in court costs and fines is suing the Marion County Clerk of Court for not allowing him to get into an affordable plan to pay them off.

Kevin Washington says in the lawsuit filed Tuesday in state court that he can’t afford the court costs arising from his 2010 felony from trafficking cocaine without an affordable payment plan.

He says he can’t get a driver’s license unless he pays the fees and that could hinder him from finding a job when he is released from prison next month.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, which is assisting Washington, says Florida law requires clerks to offer defendants an affordable payment plan.

An attorney for the clerk says he’s unable to comment.
