LOS ANGELES (AP) - A move to let drivers from Uber, Lyft and other ride-hailing companies pick up passengers at Los Angeles International Airport has run into a roadblock.

The Airport Commission approved a permit process last month that would make LAX the largest airport in the country to allow such pickups.

However, the City Council voted Wednesday to assert jurisdiction over the permit process, blocking the move for at least 20 days.

Supporters say the city needs time to look into passenger safety issues such as driver background checks, insurance and access for the disabled.

A council committee will look into the matter. The full council will then decide whether to approve the permit process or send it back to the Airport Commission for changes.

Meanwhile, ride-hailing drivers can still make airport drop-offs.
