CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A medical researcher in Mount Pleasant has been convicted of defrauding the federal government.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (https://bit.ly/1KQ3f3V) that U.S. District Judge David Norton found Dr. Jian Yun Dong guilty Tuesday of defrauding the federal government.

U.S. Attorney David Nettles says millions of dollars intended for vaccine research were diverted to a commercial real estate project.

Dong had talked about his work on a vaccine for diseases such as Ebola. But prosecutors say the federal funds he received were spent on other things. Dong had been working to build a new headquarters for his GenPhar Inc. business.

Norton’s decision comes after a five-day trial he conducted in June.

Sentencing will be later. Nettles did not say what penalties Dong faces when he is sentenced.
