WILLIAMS, Ariz. (AP) - A Northern Arizona University graduate is headed back to the region to become a forest supervisor.

Heather Provencio will start the job at the Kaibab National Forest in October. She’s now the deputy forest supervisor on the White River National Forest in Colorado.

Southwestern regional forester Cal Joyner says Provencio’s grounding in northern Arizona will allow her to move ahead quickly on fire management programs and a massive forest thinning project.

Provencio worked for the Coconino National Forest from 2001 to 2013. Her first job with the U.S. Forest Service was as a firefighter with the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest.

She says she considers Arizona home, although she was born and raised in southern Illinois.

Provencio replaces Mike Williams, who now works elsewhere in the Forest Service.
