HOLBROOK, Ariz. (AP) - A suspected wrong-way driver is in custody after an incident on a northern Arizona freeway.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say a trooper “lawfully collided” with the suspect’s vehicle in an effort to stop it about 11 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 40 about 20 miles west of Holbrook.

They say both vehicles came to rest partially within the dirt median.

The trooper then approached the vehicle and began giving the wrong-way driver commands so he could be arrested.

During the encounter, DPS officials say the trooper fired shots with the bullets hitting only the suspect’s vehicle.

The suspect was taken to a hospital as a precaution. His name wasn’t immediately released.

Westbound I-40 about midway between Holbrook and Winslow was closed for hours as DPS investigated the incident.
