SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The percentage of college-bound students seeking Pell grants is lower in Utah than any other state.

KUTV-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1MbnVXg ) that the federal government offers grants to low and middle-income college students through the Pell grant program, but students in Utah aren’t applying.

State Commissioner of Higher Education Davide Buhler says Utah is missing out on $45 million a year because students don’t fill out the paperwork.

Some students say they don’t know about the grants. Others say it seems like a lot of work to apply — it takes about an hour to fill out the online form.

Students won’t qualify for the program if they live with their parents and the parents’ income exceeds the determined limit for Pell grant recipients.
