LOS ANGELES (AP) - A fourth-grade teacher has pleaded no contest to felony child abuse for putting a plastic bag on a girl’s head in a Los Angeles classroom.

Thelmo Garcia entered the plea on Wednesday.

Prosecutors say Garcia put a bag over the head of a 10-year-old girl for several seconds in February during class at Rosewood Elementary School. The girl wasn’t hurt.

Garcia was sentenced to community service, ordered to take a year of child abuse counseling and cannot teach minors for five years. He could have faced up to six years in prison.

If Garcia meets all the conditions, his conviction will be dropped to a misdemeanor when he returns to court for sentencing in two years.
